Pre-Scheduling for Incoming Freshmen

Dear Parents,

This is an exciting time for you and your cadets as you prepare for the transition to High School! During the next couple of months there will be a great deal of anxiety, promotion preparation tasks, decision making for course progression and college-career readiness, and questions regarding what High School life will be like at Sarasota Military Academy. We would like to help you and your cadet feel prepared and informed as we start planning for next year.

Please take some time with your 8th grade cadet to discuss course options (see below, or the mailed documents) and make your selections for your preference with the understanding that the following courses are required for 9th grade cadets at SMA:

  • JROTC and Inquiry Skills (Required)
  • English 1 or English 1 Honors (with teacher recommendation and a 3 or higher on the 8thGrade FSA ELA)
  • Algebra 1 or Honors (cadets that have completed Algebra 1 may select Geometry or Geometry Honors)
  • Environmental Science (Required)
  • Biology can be taken in place of Env. Sci. with a 3 or higher on the 8thGrade FSA Science)
  • AP Human Geography (Required for Pre-IB cadets)

SMA Counselors, IB Director, and Administration will be meeting with your cadets at SMA Prep on March 7th at the beginning of school. Please write down any questions you would like addressed at this time. If you would like a follow-up call from a Counselor regarding your cadet’s course options, please write that on the course selection sheet and ask your cadet to inform the Prep or HS staff. You will also find attached the list of extra-curricular activities and programs available for your cadet at SMA.

Respectfully,

SMA-LTC Frederick T. Fout
